Small overlap front: driver-side

Rating applies to 2015-16 models

Tested vehicle: 2015 Honda Fit LX wagon

The Honda Fit was redesigned for the 2015 model year. (The 2014 model year was skipped except for a limited number of plug-in battery-electric variants.) Two small overlap front tests of the Fit were conducted. In the first test, the bumper beam, a steel bar located behind the plastic bumper cover, broke free of the frame rail on the passenger side of the car early in the crash. This caused much more of the crash energy to be absorbed by the driver side than Honda intended, resulting in extensive intrusion into the driver survival space and excessive upward movement of the steering column.

As a result, Honda improved the strength of the bumper beam welds for all Fits built after June 2014 and has announced a "product update" to replace the beams free of charge on cars built before the change was made on the assembly line (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door). In the second test of a car built with the improved bumper beam, intrusion was considerably reduced and the steering column remained much more stable during the crash.

The evaluation of the Fit is based on the second test and also applies to earlier cars repaired under Honda's product update. This modification will significantly improve protection in small overlap crashes.

The dummy’s face remained in contact with the frontal airbag, but its head still rolled around the left side of the steering wheel toward the A-pillar because the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed and had sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects. The side torso airbag also deployed.

Action shot taken during the second of two small overlap frontal crash tests.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained reasonably well in the second test.

In the second test, the seat belt allowed far too much forward movement of the dummy to the extent that its head hit the steering wheel hard through the airbag.

Intrusion of the door hinge pillar and instrument panel contributed to a moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg in the second test.

About the small overlap front test

Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2015-16 models

Tested vehicle: 2015 Honda Fit LX wagon

The Honda Fit was redesigned for the 2015 model year. (The 2014 model year was skipped except for a limited number of plug-in battery-electric variants.) Moderate overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Honda.
