Small overlap front: driver-side

Rating applies to 2014-17 models

Tested vehicle: 2014 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT 4-door 4wd

The Chevrolet Equinox was redesigned for the 2010 model year, and the GMC Terrain was introduced in the 2010 model year. Beginning with 2014 models, the front structure and door hinge pillar were modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes.

Action shot taken during the small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

The frontal and side curtain airbags worked well together to protect the head from injury in the crash test. Still, the inflated portion of the curtain airbag should extend farther forward toward the A-pillar to protect the head from contact with forward side structure and outside objects if crash circumstances were to differ slightly.

Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low.

About the small overlap front test

Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2010-17 models

Tested vehicle: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox 4-door 4wd

The Chevrolet Equinox was redesigned for the 2010 model year. Its weight has increased sufficiently to reclassify it as a midsize SUV. (Earlier models were classified as small SUVs.) The GMC Terrain was introduced in the 2010 model year. Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by General Motors.

About the original moderate overlap front test

Side: original test

Rating applies to 2010-17 models

Tested vehicle: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox LS 4-door 4wd with standard front and rear head curtain airbags and standard front seat-mounted torso airbags

The Chevrolet Equinox was redesigned for the 2010 model year. Its weight has increased sufficiently to reclassify it as a midsize SUV. (Earlier models were classified as small SUVs.) The GMC Terrain was introduced in the 2010 model year.
