Small overlap front: driver-side

Rating applies to 2016-20 models

Tested vehicle: 2016 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCab

The Ford F-150 SuperCab was redesigned for the 2015 model year. Beginning with 2016 models, "wheel blockers" like those in the SuperCrew variants were added to the vehicle frame to better control front wheel movement during small overlap frontal crashes.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics

Action shot taken during the driver-side small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

The frontal and side curtain airbags worked well together to keep the head from coming close to any stiff structure or outside objects that could cause injury.

The driver's space was maintained well, and risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low.

Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2015-20 models

Tested vehicle: 2016 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCab

The Ford F-150 SuperCab was redesigned for the 2015 model year. Two moderate overlap frontal tests were conducted, one by the Institute of a 2016 model and the other by Ford of a 2015 model. Ratings are based on both tests, but the vehicle specifications shown below are based on the Institute’s test.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics

Action shot taken during the Institute's moderate overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well (Institute test vehicle shown).

In the Institute's test, the dummy's head contacted both the frontal and side curtain airbags and then rebounded against the head restraint, as indicated by smeared greasepaint.

Although intrusion into the driver's space was minimal in both tests, forces on the right lower leg were sufficiently high to indicate the possibility of injuries.
