Driver restraints and dummy kinematics Dummy movement wasn't well controlled. During rebound, the head moved toward the driver door, which had bent outward, and hit the side glass, which had lifted out of its channel. The head then hit the roof rail and upper window frame. The driver's seat also pitched forward and tipped against the B-pillar. Because of this and the upward movement of the steering wheel, the wheel finished too close to the dummy's chest. |
Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.
The dummy's position after the crash test indicates that the steering wheel moved upward and finished too close to the dummy's chest. This proximity was exacerbated by the forward pitching of the driver seat.
Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head twisted around and hit the side glass during rebound. Head acceleration from this hit was low.
Measures on the left knee indicated the possibility of injury when the knee hit the instrument panel and steering column.

Tested vehicle: 2003 Land Rover Freelander S 4-door 4wd without side airbags (not available)
The Land Rover Freelander was introduced in the 2002 model year.
Two tests of the Freelander were conducted. The injury and head protection ratings for the driver are based on just the second test. Measures taken from the driver in the first test were not used because of a dummy malfunction. Injury and head protection ratings for the rear-seat passenger are based on both tests. Structural ratings also are based on both tests.

Driver head protection The dummy's head came close to the intruding barrier. Although the barrier did not hit the head, this test indicates that a taller occupant or one in a higher seating position would be at risk of a direct hit. |

Rear passenger head protection The dummy's head was hit by the pillar behind the rear passenger door in both tests. This pillar is required by federal standard to provide some protection for occupants' heads. |

Action shot taken during the side impact crash test, showing the driver dummy's head coming close to the intruding barrier.
Smeared greasepaint shows where rear passenger head hit the vehicle interior at the pillar behind the rear door.
