During the crash, the driver door unlatched, which shouldn't happen because the driver could be partly or completely ejected from the vehicle. The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side as the steering column moved 14 cm to the right. Additionally, the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the dummy’s head and torso, contributing to the head hitting the instrument panel. The side curtain airbag did not deploy, leaving the dummy's head vulnerable to contacts with side structure and outside objects.

Action shot taken during the small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was not maintained well.

During the crash, the dummy's head and torso barely contacted the airbag before sliding off to the left as the steering column moved to the right. The seat belt allowed the dummy to move too far forward, and the head hit the instrument panel.

Door hinge pillar and instrument panel intrusion was extensive and contributed to a high risk of injuries to the left thigh and left lower leg and a moderate risk to the left knee and right lower leg.

Action shot taken during the moderate overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained well.

Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy’s head hit the roof rail during rebound. Head acceleration from this hit was low.

Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

About the original moderate overlap front test

Side: original test

Rating applies to 2012-15 models

Tested vehicle: 2014 Mazda 5 Sport wagon with standard head curtain airbags for all three rows of seats and standard front seat-mounted torso airbags

Driver head protection
The side curtain airbag did not fully cover the window opening near the dummy's head during deployment. After the head was contacted by the side airbag, it continued to move outward and downward until it was hit by the window sill of the driver door, when the head was in near proximity with the intruding barrier. Although the barrier did not hit the dummy's head in this test, this near miss indicates that only slightly different crash circumstances could produce a direct hit to a person's head.

View of the vehicle after the crash with doors removed, showing the side airbags and damage to the occupant compartment.

Smeared greasepaint low on the side curtain airbag shows that the driver dummy's head was inadequately protected and that the head continued farther downward and was hit by the window sill.

Smeared greasepaint shows where the rear passenger dummy’s head was protected by the side airbag (note contrast with driver dummy's head contact).
