Small overlap front: driver-side
Rating applies to 2014-15 models built after February 2014
Tested vehicle: 2014 Scion xB 4-door
The Scion xB was redesigned for the 2008 model year. Beginning with 2014 models built after February 2014, the side curtain airbags were reprogrammed to deploy in frontal crashes and changes were made to better control the stability of the steering column to improve occupant protection in small overlap crashes. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.)

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with forward side structure. Additionally, the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the dummy’s head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed but does not have sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with forward side structure and outside objects. |
Action shot taken during the small overlap frontal crash test.
The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was not maintained well.
During the crash, the dummy's head and torso barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off to the left. The seat belt allowed the dummy to move too far forward, as is evident from the gap between the seat back and the dummy's torso. The side curtain airbag did not extend far enough forward toward the A-pillar.
Despite considerable intrusion into the driver footwell area, risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low.

Tested vehicle: 2008 Scion xB wagon
The Scion xB was redesigned for the 2008 model year. Its size and weight have increased sufficiently to reclassify it as a small car. (The earlier design was classified as a minicar.) Frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Toyota.

Tested vehicle: 2013 Scion XB wagon with standard front and rear head curtain airbags and standard front seat-mounted torso airbags
The Scion xB was redesigned for the 2008 model year. Its size and weight have increased sufficiently to reclassify it as a small car. (The earlier design was classified as a minicar.) Beginning with 2013 models, design changes were made to the side curtain and side torso airbags and front and rear door trim panels.
Two tests of the xB were conducted, one of a 2008 model by the Institute and the other representing a 2013 model by Toyota. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structure ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests. (The car tested by Toyota was designated as a 2012 model but included the side curtain airbag and door trim changes of the 2013 models.)
