About the original moderate overlap front test

Side: original test

Rating applies to 2012-15 models built after June 2012

Tested vehicle: 2012 Smart Fortwo Passion 2-door with standard front head curtain airbags and standard front seat-mounted torso airbags

The Smart Fortwo was introduced in the 2008 model year. As its name implies, the Smart accommodates only two people; there is no rear seat. Beginning with 2011 models, head curtain airbags and separate seat-mounted side torso airbags replaced the combination seat-mounted head and torso side airbags used in earlier models. Modifications were also made to the door structure.

Beginning with 2012 models built after June 2012, the head curtain airbags were modified. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.) Side ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Mercedes-Benz, the manufacturer of the Smart,. (The newly tested car was designated as a 2011 model but included the head curtain airbag changes of 2012 models built after June 2012.)
