Rating applies to 2005-11 models

Tested vehicle: 2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab SLT 4x2

The Dodge Dakota was redesigned for the 2005 model year and discontinued after the 2011 model year. The Mitsubishi Raider was introduced in the 2006 model year and discontinued after the 2009 model year.

Action shot taken during the frontal offset crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the steering wheel and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained very well.

Smeared greasepaint indicates where the dummy's head hit the B-pillar during rebound. Head acceleration from this hit was negligible.

Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and all leg and foot injury measures were low.

About the original moderate overlap front test

Side: original test

Rating applies to 2005-10 models

Tested vehicle: 2008 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab SLT 4x2 without optional side airbags

The Dodge Dakota was redesigned for the 2005 model year and discontinued after the 2011 model year. The Mitsubishi Raider was introduced in the 2006 model year and discontinued after the 2009 model year. Side airbags became standard in 2011 Dakota models (they were optional in earlier Dakota models and in all Raider models.)

Because this test produced almost identical results to those of a 2010 Dodge Dakota with optional side airbags tested later in which the side airbags failed to deploy, the injury ratings and head protection ratings for both the driver and passenger are based on both tests. Structural ratings also are based on both tests. The cause of the nondeployment has since been determined, and Chrysler Corporation made changes on the production line and announced a customer service campaign for trucks built before March 2010. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.)

Driver head protection
In the test of the 2010 model, the dummy's head was hit by the window sill of the driver door. This impact did not produce high head injury measures, but the head protection is inadequate. In the test of the 2008 model, the head was not struck by the intruding barrier or any part of the vehicle, but the head remained unprotected from contacts outside the vehicle. This indicates that only slightly different crash circumstances could produce a direct hit to a person's head.

In both tests, the dummy's head was hit by the window frame of the rear passenger door and the pillar behind the door. This impact did not produce high head injury measures, but the head protection is inadequate.

Tested vehicle: 2010 Dodge Dakota Big Horn Crew Cab 4x2 with optional front and rear head curtain airbags

The test vehicle was equipped with optional side curtain airbags, but they did not deploy during the side impact crash.

Because this test produced almost identical results to those of a 2008 Dodge Dakota without side airbags tested earlier, the injury ratings and head protection ratings for both the driver and passenger are based on both tests. Structural ratings also are based on both tests.
