Small overlap front: driver-side
Rating applies to 2015-18 models built after May 2015
Tested vehicle: 2015 Ford Edge SEL 4-door 4wd
The Ford Edge was redesigned for the 2015 model year. Beginning with 2015 models built after May 2015, the door hinge pillar was reinforced to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.) The tested Edge was built after this change was made on the assembly line.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics
The dummy’s movement was reasonably well controlled. The dummy’s head remained largely in contact with the frontal airbag, but its head still moved toward the intruding A-pillar because the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the dummy's head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed and has sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects. The side torso airbag also deployed. |
Action shot taken during the small overlap frontal crash test.
The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained reasonably well.
During the crash, the seat belt allowed the dummy's head and torso to move too far forward into a gap between the frontal and side airbags.
Intrusion into the driver's space was reasonably well controlled, and risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low.

Tested vehicle: 2015 Ford Edge SEL 4-door 4wd
The Ford Edge was redesigned for the 2015 model year, and the Lincoln MKX was redesigned for the 2016 model year. Moderate overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Ford.
Beginning with the 2019 model year, the Lincoln MKX was restyled and renamed the Lincoln Nautilus. All ratings on this page apply to the Edge, MKX, and Nautilus.
