Small overlap front: driver-side

Rating applies to 2015-20 models

Tested vehicle: 2015 Toyota Sienna LE

The Toyota Sienna was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Beginning with 2015 models, the front-end structure was modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes.

Driver restraints and dummy kinematics
The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with forward structure. Additionally, the seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the dummy’s head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed and had sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects. The side torso airbag also deployed.

Action shot taken during the driver-side small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was not maintained well.

During the crash, the dummy's head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off to the left, and the seat belt allowed the dummy to move too far forward, as is evident from the gap between the dummy's torso and the seat back.

Despite considerable intrusion of the instrument panel and door hinge pillar and some intrusion of the parking brake pedal, risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low.

About the small overlap front test

Small overlap front: passenger-side

Rating applies to 2011-20 models

Tested vehicle: 2018 Toyota Sienna LE

The Toyota Sienna was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Although Toyota reinforced the structure in later model years on the driver side to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes, no such changes were made on the passenger side.

Action shot taken during the passenger-side small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame and dashboard after the crash test indicates that the passenger's survival space was not maintained well.

The frontal and side curtain airbags worked well together to keep the passenger dummy’s head from coming close to any stiff structure or outside objects that could cause injury.

Extensive intrusion of the dashboard and door hinge pillar contributed to a moderate risk of injuries to the right hip and right lower leg.

About the original moderate overlap front test

Side: original test

Rating applies to 2014-20 models

Tested vehicle: 2014 Toyota Sienna LE with standard head curtain airbags for all three rows of seats and standard front seat-mounted torso airbags

The Toyota Sienna was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Beginning with 2014 models, the side torso airbags were modified to improve the protection of drivers and front seat passengers in side impact crashes. Side ratings are assigned by the Institute based on tests conducted by Toyota.

Two tests of the Sienna were conducted, one of a 2011 model and the other representing a 2014 model. These vehicles are rated separately, except that the structure ratings for both vehicles are based on both tests, as are rear passenger dummy injury and head protection ratings, because no changes were made affecting structure or rear seat occupants. (The vehicle tested by Toyota was designated as a 2011 model but included the side torso airbag changes of the 2014 models.)
