Small overlap front

The small overlap front evaluation consists of a driver-side and a passenger-side component. If the results of the two evaluations differ, then the combined small overlap rating is equal to the lower rating.

Driver-side

  • Rating applies to 2018-24 models

Tested vehicle: 2018 Toyota Camry LE 4-door

The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2018 model year. Driver-side small overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Toyota.

The dummy’s face remained in contact with the frontal airbag, but its head still moved too far to the right toward the gap in coverage between the frontal and side curtain airbags. The side curtain airbag deployed and has sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects.

Action shot taken during the passenger-side small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame and dashboard after the crash test indicates that the passenger’s survival space was maintained very well.

The dummy’s head contacted the frontal airbag but moved too far to the right, allowing the head to approach the gap in coverage between the frontal and side curtain airbags.

The passenger’s space was maintained well, and risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low.

View of the vehicle after the crash showing the airbags and damage to the occupant compartment.

The rear passenger dummy's head approached the front seatback, which increases the risk of head injuries.

Rear passenger dummy injury values indicate a low risk of injury to the head or neck and a moderate risk of injury to the chest. During the crash, the shoulder belt remained in an ideal position on the dummy’s chest.

The rear passenger dummy's lap belt moved from the ideal position on the pelvis onto the abdomen, increasing the risk of abdominal injuries.

Side: updated test

Rating applies to 2023-24 models built after January 2023

Tested vehicle: 2023 Toyota Camry LE 4-door

The Toyota Camry was redesigned for the 2018 model year. Beginning with 2023 models built after January 2023, the side sill structure, front and rear door trim, and front side airbags were modified to improve occupant protection in side impact crashes. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.) Side 2.0 ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test of a 2023 Camry conducted by Toyota.
