Small overlap front
The small overlap front evaluation consists of a driver-side and a passenger-side component. If the results of the two evaluations differ, then the combined small overlap rating is equal to the lower rating.
Driver-side
- Rating applies to 2017-25 models
Tested vehicle: 2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 4-door 4wd
The Mazda CX-5 was redesigned for the 2017 model year. Driver-side small overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Mazda.

Tested vehicle: 2024 Mazda CX-5 2.5 Select 4-door 4wd
The Mazda CX-5 was redesigned for the 2017 model year. Beginning with 2023 models, rear seatbelt load limiters and pre-tensioners were added to improve rear occupant protection in moderate overlap frontal crashes.

View of the vehicle after the crash showing the airbags and damage to the occupant compartment.

The rear passenger dummy's head approached the front seatback, which increases the risk of head injuries.

Rear passenger dummy injury values indicate a low risk of injury to the head or neck and chest. During the crash, the shoulder belt remained in an ideal position on the dummy’s chest.

The rear passenger dummy's lap belt remained in the ideal position on the pelvis.

Tested vehicle: 2021 Mazda CX-5 Sport 4-door 4wd
The Mazda CX-5 was redesigned for the 2017 model year. Two tests of 2021 CX-5 models were conducted. The injury ratings for the rear passenger are based on just the second test; measures for the rear passenger in the first test were not obtained because the dummy's arm stub dropped out of position just before the crash. The injury ratings for the driver and the structural ratings are based on both tests.

Distance at which headlights provide at least 5 lux illumination: |
Low beams
On the straightaway, visibility was good on the right side of the road and fair on the left side. On curves, visibility was good on the sharp left and both right curves and fair on the gradual left curve.
The low beams created some glare.
High beams
On the straightaway, visibility was fair on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was good on the gradual left and gradual right curves and fair on the sharp left and sharp right curves.
High-beam assist compensates for some limitations of this vehicle's low beams on the straightaway and on both left curves.
